The Alliance announces scholarship recipients

THE ALLIANCE ANNOUNCES SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS


Rosemont, Ill.—The Roofing Industry Alliance for Progress has announced the recipients of its Melvin Kruger Endowed Scholarships for the 2011-12 academic year. The scholarship program assists employees of National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA) contractor and supplier members. Employees and their families who plan to pursue post-secondary education in college and vocational programs are eligible for the merit-based scholarships. Scholarship recipients will receive funding for up to four years of full-time study at any accredited post-secondary institution of the student's choice.

The Alliance awarded new Melvin Kruger Endowed Scholarships to Sean Cawley of Birmingham, Ala., son of Mitchell Cawley, president of Roofers Mart Southeast Inc., Birmingham, and Neil Hourahan of Saunderstown, R.I., son of Donald Hourahan, project manager for Furey Roofing and Construction, Providence, R.I.

Individuals or companies that commit a minimum of $100,000 to the scholarship fund can choose to name a scholarship and participate in recipient selection each year. A new Fred Good Scholarship was awarded to James Burkhardt of New Baltimore, Mich., son of Bill Burkhardt, president of Four Seasons Roofing, Shelby Twp., Mich. A new Firestone Scholarship also was awarded to Alexis Plachecki of Taylor, Wis., daughter of Bernard Plachecki, owner/operator of WHV Inc., Winona, Minn.

Additionally, the Alliance renewed five Melvin Kruger Endowed Scholarships for the 2011-12 academic year. The recipients are Gabriella Abbondanza of Southwick, Mass., who is attending Suffolk University, Boston; Joseph Baker of Apex, N.C., who is attending North Carolina State University, Raleigh, and will receive a Firestone Scholarship; Alexis Belote of Red Oak, Texas, who is attending University of Texas at Austin; Charanya Kaushik of McMurray, Pa., who is attending Washington & Jefferson College, Washington, Pa.; and Laura Stabile of Wolcott, Conn., who is attending Lee University, Cleveland, Tenn., and will receive the Dan Cohen Scholarship.

Each recipient will receive a $5,000 award. Awards are renewable for up to three years of undergraduate study or until a bachelor's degree is earned provided recipients renew annually and maintain a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale (or the equivalent).

Two scholarships from the Alliance's previous scholarship program also were renewed for the 2011-12 academic year. The recipients, who will receive $1,000 each, are Brittany Cook of Naperville, Ill., who is attending the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, and Jason Hartman of Nashville, Tenn., who is attending the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

The Roofing Industry Alliance for Progress was established within the National Roofing Foundation to create an endowment fund to serve as a highly focused resource for the roofing industry and its customers.
