Students win roofing industry scholarships

The Roofing Industry Alliance for Progress has announced the winners of its Melvin Kruger Endowed Scholarships for the 2011-12 academic year.

This year's new scholarship recipients include James Burkhardt, New Baltimore, Mich., son of Bill Burkhardt, president of Four Seasons Roofing, Shelby Township., Mich. , who has been awarded the Fred Good Scholarship; Sean Cawley, Birmingham, Ala., son of Mitchell Cawley, president of Roofers Mart Southeast Inc., Birmingham, Ala.; Neil Hourahan, Saunderstown, R.I., son of Donald Hourahan, project manager for Furey Roofing and Construction, Providence, R.I.; and Alexis Plachecki, Taylor, Wis., daughter of Bernard Plachecki, owner/operator of WHV Inc., Winona, Minn., who has been awarded a Firestone Scholarship.

The Melvin Kruger Endowed Scholarship Program, which permanently replaced the Alliance's previous scholarship program in 2008, provides recipients with $5,000 per year based on eligibility for up to four years of enrollment at an accredited college, university or vocational-technical school. NRCA contractor or supplier member companies’ full-time employees or their immediate family members are eligible for the merit-based scholarships, which are granted without regard to race, color, creed, religion, age, gender, disability or national origin.

In addition, the Alliance renewed five Melvin Kruger Endowed Scholarships for the 2011-12 academic year. The recipients are Gabriella Abbondanza, Southwick, Mass., who is attending Suffolk University, Boston, Mass.; Joseph Baker, Apex, N.C., who is attending North Carolina State University, Raleigh, N.C., and was awarded a Firestone Scholarship; Alexis Belote, Red Oak, Texas, who is attending University of Texas at Austin, Austin, Texas; Charanya Kaushik, McMurray, Pa., who is attending Washington & Jefferson College, Washington, Pa.; and Laura Stabile, Wolcott, Conn., who is attending Lee University, Cleveland, Tenn., and was awarded the Dan Cohen Scholarship.

The Alliance also renewed two scholarships from its previous scholarship program for the 2011-12 academic year. The recipients are Brittany Cook, Naperville, Ill., who is attending the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Champaign, Ill.; and Jason Hartman, Nashville, Tenn., who is attending the University of Tennessee: Knoxville, Knoxville, Tenn.
